Gallium Oxide

Description

Gallium oxide (Ga₂O₃) is an inorganic compound which has wide bandgap thermos stable semiconductor material. It is a transparent, white crystalline solid or powder with a melting point around 1725°C. It exists in polymorphs, of which the, beta (β) phase being the most stable. It is used in power electronics instead of GaN and SiC.

Appearance: White to almost white powder or crystals.
Melting Point: Approximately 1725°C.
Bandgap: 4.7-4.9eV (a very wide bandgap).

Solubility: Insoluble in water but soluble in hot alkalis and acids.
Density: 5.900gm/cc-6.51gm/cc which is depend on source.
Thermal Conductivity: its thermal conductivity is lower compared to (SiC), due to wide bandgaps.

Chemical Properties:

Gallium oxide is amphoteric; it can react with both acids and bases.
Reduction: It has a reducing property which can be reduced to gallium suboxide (Ga₂O) in the presence of H2 gas or moisture.

Applications:

Semiconductor: It is use in various semiconductor as a raw material.
Power: Switching devices and active high-voltage applications such as power diodes, power transistor.
Gas Sensors: Used as a sensor for detecting gases like oxygen and hydrogen.
UV Detectors: Its β polymorphous state used in power electronic.
High-Power RF Devices: Radio-frequency amplifiers for wireless communication
LEDs and other optical devices: Used in visible-light LEDs and other optical devices due to its transparency.
Lasers: Use as a passive component in lasers.
Its ε-Phase or forms use in solar-blind uv photodetector
In the synthesis inorganic or organo metallic compound.
